Explore the fascinating evolution of Nørre Campus from boggy bleach meadows to a modern research hub on this guided walking tour. The tour explores over 100 years of architectural history and provides insight into the area's transformation from natural landscape to university quarter.
The tour begins at Mærsk Tower, where you see the new framework for health sciences in Copenhagen. From there, you explore the iconic Panum Complex with its distinctive 1970s brutalist architecture—raw concrete surfaces and heavy proportions that tell a unique era's story. You learn about the reasoning behind the uncompromising architectural expression facing Tagensvej.
Through Universitetsparken you encounter classical campus planning with freestanding buildings, green spaces, and a vibrant student environment. Along the way you see, among others, the University Library, the H.C. Ørsted Building, the Anatomical Institute's auditoriums, and the newer Niels Bohr Building—an important milestone in the story of research and modern architecture.
The tour also highlights the area's deeper past: before the university, the Nørre Campus area was characterized by marshes, fields, and bleach meadows outside the city. Later came Blegdams Hospital and other medical facilities, before Copenhagen University shaped the area as we know it today.
