A workshop exploring how social movements and civil society organisations use digital tools to build power and organise effectively—even when repressive governments and mainstream platforms expose them to surveillance, censorship or network shutdowns. The event brings together movement leaders, digital activists, researchers and policymakers to examine the strategies civil society employs to keep digital spaces open.
Program
- 15:00–15:10: Opening remarks
- 15:10–16:00: Panel: "Navigating Digital Suppression & Platform Power" featuring Nadim Nashif (7amleh), Brian Malika (One More Percent, Kenya), MFA representative (TBC), Nievas Molina (Danish Institute for Human Rights) and moderated by Vukasin Petrovic (ActionAid Denmark)
- 16:00–16:15: Break
- 16:15–17:15: Breakout sessions with two parallel tracks:
- Organising Under Digital Restriction: From Kenya to Jordan – examining how movements maintain momentum when governments restrict or block network access. Includes cases from Kenya's Finance Bill protests and Nepal-based coordination.
- Tech Policy, Censorship & Algorithmic Discrimination: Co-hosted by 7amleh, Oxfam Denmark and International Media Support, exploring examples from Palestine on how international allies can press platforms for accountability.
- 17:15–18:00: Networking space for informal conversation
The workshop is grounded in real-world practices rather than abstract theory, drawing on cases from Kenya, Zambia, Palestine and Jordan to explore how movements adapt, build workarounds and use community-driven technologies.
