An evening dedicated to chamber music's most iconic ensemble – the piano trio. Coros Trio explores the tradition behind this classic combination of violin, cello, and piano through works by four great composers.
The program spans from Joseph Haydn's classical period – he wrote 45 trios in total and shaped the foundation of the genre – to modern times. Sally Beamish wrote TRANCE as a direct homage to Haydn's Trio in F-sharp minor, and the two works open the evening side by side. Kaija Saariaho, one of today's most acclaimed composers, approaches the genre for the first time with Light and Matter – a work she long hesitated to write precisely because of the tradition's weighty significance.
The evening's main work is Franz Schubert's Trio No. 2 in E-flat major, written just one year before the composer's death at age 31. It is one of chamber music's most admired works and equally one of its most demanding – not because it is forgotten, but because it places extraordinary demands on all three musicians. It is a comprehensive and generous piece of music, a masterwork that delivers an overwhelming experience for both performers and audience.
