Steve Reich's innovative Grammy-winning work "Different Trains" forms the cornerstone of this concert. This fascinating composition for string quartet and tape explores Reich's reflections on the years surrounding World War II and the significance of trains in both the USA and Europe. Voices of Holocaust survivors and train sounds interweave with the musicians' instrumental expression into a unified artistic whole.
Program
- M. L. Sirmen: String Quartet No. 2 in B major
- L. Janácek: String Quartet No. 1 "Kreutzer Sonata"
- Intermission
- S. Reich: Different Trains
The concert opens with Maddalena Sirmen's string quartet from the 18th century — an almost contemporary work with Haydn's first string quartets, which are considered among the foundational compositions for the ensemble type. Janácek's music is characterized by adventurous fantasy; his first string quartet, inspired by Tolstoy's "Kreutzer Sonata," explores themes of jealousy, desire, and remorse.
