Return to a well-attended lecture on seeds and cultivation, this time expanded with greater emphasis on soil condition and its critical role in agriculture's future. The event builds on the mission and work of the Association for Originals and is relevant for anyone involved in vegetable growing, agricultural practice, climate, biodiversity, and the development of our food system.
Bjarne Hansen, who is affiliated with both the Association for Originals and works as a grain expert at Aurion, covers among other topics:
- Why preservation of biological diversity is crucial
- Advantages of heritage varieties: better taste, greater resilience, and ability for self-propagation
- Risks associated with hybrid seeds controlled by large international corporations
- Questions regarding conservation of genetic material in relation to building seed banks
The second part of the lecture focuses on soil improvement and the soil's microbial ecosystem. The audience gains insight into what characterizes soil health and which factors can damage it — such as mechanized farming, chemical treatments, artificial fertilizers, crop rotation patterns, and crop selection. The lecture explores practical solutions, systemic improvements, and what farmers, politicians, and citizens can each contribute to ensure a well-functioning soil. It also addresses the costs of neglecting soil welfare and barriers to achieving it.
Practical information: The event takes place at Suhrs Højskole. Admission is free, but registration is required.
