Why is little Denmark and large, fjord-filled Greenland actually connected together? This guided walking tour explores the many ties between the two countries – political, commercial, royal, social, cultural, and climatic relations that have shaped both history and the present-day relationship.
Along the way you encounter major historical events: Erik the Red's discoveries, Hans Egede's missionary work, and the adventurous whale hunters and explorers. We delve into the encounter with the Inuit and the remarkable chapter from 1724 when Pooq and Quiperoq were sent to Copenhagen as ambassadors to secure the king's favor and continued support for the colony.
The tour also touches on the dramatic World War II events, when Henrik Kauffmann negotiated American military bases in Greenland without seeking Danish approval – an agreement later ratified by the Rigsdag. You gain insight into modernization and the cultural tensions between Denmark and Greenland, as well as how the Arctic region today takes on renewed strategic importance.
Naturally we pass the North Atlantic Warehouse and the memorial for the ship Hans Hedtoft, which was lost with 95 people aboard.
