A deeply human theater performance in which a now 89-year-old man tells his personal story from childhood during World War II. The Jewish-Dutch boy Joop arrived alone in Denmark in September 1945, aged just 9, for a recuperation stay with a Danish foster family after surviving two years in German concentration camps.
Through simple theatrical means, Joop's moving memories unfold as an intimate monologue, marked by authenticity and direct dialogue with the audience. The performance balances gravity and hope—the story of war and survival is told honestly and plainly, yet also makes room for humor and childhood's naive optimism. Since its premiere in September 2023, the production has been performed over 90 times at schools and smaller theater venues around the country.
