John – Voices from the Streets

Join John on a personal and eye-opening guided tour of Vesterbro, where he shares his story – from restless youth as a cabin boy to decades on the streets with substance abuse and an inner transformation.

John was sent out to sail as a young seafarer and tried heroin for the first time at 16 on the open sea. This marked the beginning of over 20 years as a person struggling with addiction on the streets – first in Aarhus, then in Copenhagen. He speaks openly about the grief behind addiction, time in prison in both Thailand and Denmark, and the moment in isolation when reading and philosophy began to awaken him to a new life.

This tour is about public enlightenment and showing people with substance abuse for what they are: people with depth, interests and dreams. John will guide you around Vesterbro, point out the services available for people struggling with addiction, and offer perspective on his life with honesty and hope.
