A fascinating guided city walk through Kommunehospitalet's history, architecture, and transformation from cholera hospital to today's university campus. The tour follows architect Christian Hansen's monumental complex built 1859-63 and explores the interplay between building design, health history, and Copenhagen's urban development.
Along the way, you will experience the hospital's iconic garden parks – an important part of patient treatment – and the long basement corridors where the hospital's technical operations remained hidden. You will see the original 12-bed wards, revolutionarily equipped with central heating, ventilation, and running water, and discover traces of 1950s atomic preparedness bunkers. The tour also includes later extensions, nurses' quarters, and the central workshop.
The guide discusses the historical journey from cholera-era health ideals through medical breakthroughs to today's research environment – enriched with personal anecdotes from his family's history at the hospital and insights into how architecture shapes institutions and people's daily lives.
