At the NordOrd literary salon at Nordatlantens Brygge, you can experience Annette Lassen and Erik Skyum-Nielsen in conversation about Halldór Laxness’ newly translated classic Salka Valka. The discussion focuses on the novel’s continued relevance and its portrayal of a strong woman fighting for a dignified life in a harsh world. The evening’s conversation is moderated by Birgir Thor Møller.
Salka Valka has been republished for the first time since 1934, now in its complete version, newly translated by Annette Lassen and with a foreword by Kristín Marja Baldursdóttir. Halldór Laxness received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1955 and is regarded as one of Iceland’s most important authors. His well-known works also include Frie folk (1934) and the novel series Verdens lys (1937-40).
Annette Lassen is a researcher, author and translator, and a professor at the University of Copenhagen at Den Arnamagnæanske Håndskriftsamling. Erik Skyum-Nielsen is a literary historian, communicator, professor emeritus at the University of Copenhagen, and a critic at Information since 1978. He has translated more than one hundred books from Icelandic and written Islands litterære mirakel (2019).
The conversation is in Danish and lasts approximately 75 minutes, including questions from the audience. Doors open 45 minutes before the start, and seating is unnumbered, so arriving early is recommended. Salka Valka will be sold at a special price in the literary salon café. Nordatlantens Brygge does not refund purchased event tickets, and members of Nordatlantens venner receive a 25% discount upon presentation of a valid membership card at the entrance.
