Mazaher, a group of musicians and singers based in Cairo, brings Egypt's ancient zar traditions to life. Since the late 1990s, the group has been a guardian of this ritual music form, which combines singing, dancing, and complex percussion to create harmony among participants. Zar music is about loosening the social bonds that bind people together, and women play a crucial role in the ritual.
Among the members are Um Sameh, Um Hassan, and Nour El Sabah – among the last practicing zar musicians in Egypt. Mazaher's music is inspired by three different Egyptian zar styles and employs instruments such as the sacred six-stringed tamboura and the percussion instrument mangour. With performances across Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East, Mazaher has repeatedly proven their ability to move audiences with the healing and reconciling power of zar music. An engaging and cathartic concert experience awaits.
