A fascinating lecture where opera expert Thomas Milholt explores how our understanding and experience of opera has evolved over the past two centuries. Through concrete examples from Mozart, Rossini, Verdi and Wagner, the lecture examines why we today often perceive music as being filled with meanings and emotions that words alone cannot express.
Do we listen to opera as the composers originally intended, or do our modern experiences – from art history to film music – fundamentally affect how we interpret works such as Don Giovanni and La Traviata? Drawing on DVD clips from different performances and periods, the audience gets the opportunity to experience the same scenes through both historical eyes and today's perspective.
