Do you dream of writing stories based on real events, experiences and histories - but shaped through literary techniques that make them captivating, nuanced and compelling? This workshop is for you.
We explore narrative nonfiction, a genre where real events are transformed into powerful, intensely vivid narratives. You will learn to combine research, facts and personal voice with narrative techniques that create depth and reader engagement.
The questions we address: How do you create a story that is both true and exciting? How do you handle structure, characters and scenic presentation when dealing with real experiences? And how do you balance documentation with artistic freedom?
You will gain tools for:
- Research and source criticism - collect and select facts, interviews, sources and material that support your story
- Narrative techniques - use scenes, dialogue, senses and perspective to bring your subjects to life
- Ethics and responsibility - tell others' stories with respect and a strong voice
- Your personal voice - find the angle that makes your writing unique
The instructor is Mette Mayli Albæk, journalist, author and nonfiction publisher at Politikens Forlag. She has a background as an investigative journalist and editor and currently leads the publication of some of Denmark's strongest nonfiction narratives. She masters both research technique and the art of transforming real stories into engaging literature.
