Falstaff tells the story of Sir John Falstaff, a self-satisfied and arrogant man who seeks to seduce two married women in hopes of obtaining their money. The two women, intelligent and resourceful, turn the tables on him and make him the target of their wit and revenge.
This production from Salzburg Festival is presented as a cinema screening. Director Michieletto has placed the work in a contemporary setting: a nursing home for elderly musicians, inspired by the historical Casa Verdi. Here, Falstaff becomes not just Shakespeare's classic comic figure, but a former opera singer reliving his memories and former roles anew through imagination and dreams. This artistic framework transforms the opera into both a spirited comedy and a profound reflection on aging, artistic identity, and the passage of time for people within the arts.
