Scrumpy celebrates 50 years as one of Denmark's longest-running folk ensembles. The band began in autumn 1976 with their first performance – and it started so modestly that there was barely any money left after paying for the venue. Over recent decades, the project has developed significantly, and Scrumpy is now known for its energetic repertoire of traditional Irish and Scottish music.
The music encompasses classic reels, jigs and hornpipes, mixed with beautiful melancholic passages and some distinctly lively numbers – often sung in Gaelic and occasionally in Danish. The ensemble consists of five skilled musicians who together create an authentic folk soundscape:
- Allan Aasbjerg – guitar, banjo and vocals
- Steen Aasbjerg – woodwinds
- Jørgen Hanskov – violin
- Lars Kofoed – accordion
- Torben Kure – guitar, cittern, vocals and mandolin
The band is famous for setting an unofficial Danish record for "farewell concerts" – this anniversary concert will be number 121 in the series. A must for folk musicians and everyone who loves authentic Irish and Scottish music.
