Stigma is a dance performance that explores the concept of stigma in its many forms – the innate, the self-chosen, the imposed. The work examines the mark that both physically and psychologically separates people from one another, seeking to create a deeper understanding of what it means to be marked or different.
The performance draws from a poetic universe: "A gaze that stares inward, toward a black point deep inside, what remains. Whispers on inaccessible frequencies, underground, undersea, in narrow slits between registered wavelengths" – from Paal-Helge Haugen's Passage.
Stigma was originally produced by Åben Dans and developed in close collaboration with composers and musicians Jacob Kirkegaard and Sture Ericson. After its premiere at the Singler festival at the National Museum of Art in 1999, the work has toured extensively both in Denmark and internationally.
