Mindfulness has evolved from monastic Buddhist traditions to become a significant part of our modern world – appearing in neuroscience laboratories, corporate management, and smartphone applications. But what does mindfulness really mean, and how should we understand its core ideas?
Philosophy professor Dan Zahavi and postdoctoral fellow Odysseus Stone explore central aspects of contemporary mindfulness: focus on the present moment, the cultivation of non-judgmental awareness, and the notion that we should view our thoughts as mental processes rather than direct reflections of reality. By drawing on phenomenology – a philosophical tradition often associated with mindfulness – the speakers will present an alternative approach and critical assessment of the mindfulness concept.
This event is the second lecture in the series "Psychedelics, mindfulness and our relationship with ourselves: Can the self change?" In three talks, researchers from the Center for Subjectivity Research will discuss how psychedelics, mindfulness, and togetherness can transform the boundaries of our self-perception and influence how we experience ourselves, others, and the world around us.
