A unique wine tasting where five carefully selected wines are presented through their geographical and historical connection to Roman battlefields and conquests. The hosts combine wine expertise with military-historical insight and tell the stories of dramatic events that unfolded near these wine regions.
Five chapters of the evening:
- The Rhineland and Teutoburg Forest (9 AD): Riesling from Dreissigacker. Three Roman legions were annihilated in an ambush, and the defeat established the Rhine as Rome's border. The region's classical wine-growing has its roots in Roman times.
- Umbria/Lazio and the Battle of Allia (390 BC): Bramito del Cervo Bianco from Castello della Sala. Rome's tragic defeat and plundering became a catalyst for reforms and a stronger military – and the area became a European wine culture center.
- Marche and the Battle of Metaurus (207 BC): Marche Sangiovese Organic from Cantine Volpi. Carthaginian general Hasdrubal was defeated before meeting his brother Hannibal – the turning point in the Second Punic War.
- Burgundy and the Siege of Alesia (52 BC): Côte de Beaune Rouge from Maison Joseph Drouhin. Julius Caesar's engineering prowess secured control of Gaul and laid the foundation for Burgundy's famous wine culture.
- Apulia and the Battle of Cannae (216 BC): Torcicoda Primitivo from Tormaresca. Hannibal's classic double encirclement destroyed a massive Roman army – still studied in strategy courses today.
This is more than wine tasting – it is a time machine with a glass in your hand, perfect for wine lovers with historical curiosity and history enthusiasts with refined taste. The host also shares insider tips to museums in each region for those who wish to explore the locations themselves.
