Wine & Science: The Greenlandic Mummies is a sold-out talk about the five mummies from Uunartoq Island in South Greenland, which were officially returned to the National Museum of Greenland in 2024. The event focuses on the Angerlartunnguit project, in which researchers investigate the mummies’ life histories and the Inuit culture they were part of through modern analyses of bodies, clothing, tattoos, burial sites, and grave goods.
Five experts connected to the project take part: archaeologist CHRISTIAN EDELFELT KOCH MADSEN, Inuit tattoo researcher MAYA SIALUK EDELFELT KOCH MADSEN, forensic anthropologist CHIARA VILLA, biological anthropologist and forensic anthropologist MARIE LOUISE JØRKOV, and archaeologist PETER ANDREAS TOFT. The programme covers the story of the discovery, the mummies’ dramatic journey to the USA and Denmark, the significance of tattoos in Inuit spiritual belief, and preliminary research findings based on methods including CT scanning and 3D visualisation. A glass of wine is served during the intermission and is included in the price. All talks are in Danish, and tickets for Wine & Science cannot be exchanged or refunded.
