Goethe's classic novel about young Werther's tragic love affair is revived in this French opera production at Gamle Scene. Composer Jules Massenet transforms the story of vulnerability, longing, and unrequited love into music of tender beauty.
The opera is directed by the internationally acclaimed Tatjana Gürbaca, who creates a psychologically intense production where the intimate stage space becomes a symbol of Werther's inner world and the condition of love. The Royal Chapel's French chief conductor Marie Jacquot interprets Massenet's music for the first time, while tenor Jacob Skov Andersen sings the title role as Werther and mezzo-soprano Elisabeth Jansson portrays his beloved Charlotte. The work is sung in French with Danish and English subtitles.
