World Toilet Day is celebrated annually as a UN day worldwide, focusing on the importance of access to sanitation and clean water – a fundamental human right often neglected due to cultural taboos. This important day is marked through a film screening and artistic performance at Kulturhuset Islands Brygge.
The event opens with a performance by visual artist and performer Ulla Hvejsel, who activates the audience's awareness of digestion and guides us through archaeological and apocryphal stories. The topics include the use of urine as fertilizer, detergent, teeth whitening, and many other practical and cultural applications throughout history.
Following this is a screening of the documentary film Holy Shit – Can Poop Save the World? by documentarian Ruben Abruna. In the film, Abruna travels around the world and meets experts and pioneers in circular sanitation, demonstrating the possibilities hidden in waste materials. This award-winning film is being shown for the first time in Denmark.
