Zadie Smith, born 1975, is one of the most significant British authors of our time. Since her debut with the novel White Teeth (2000), she has established herself as one of her generation's sharpest voices. Her work spans widely across novels, essays, short stories, drama, and children's books, and is marked by a remarkable ability to navigate across generations, cultures, and social classes.
Smith's universe is populated by multicultural environments and characters with diverse ethnic and social backgrounds. With both sharpness and humour, she explores people shaped by their roots, and her narratives examine cultural misunderstandings and conflicts. Yet she insists that humans always possess agency despite structural constraints – a belief that gives her literature depth and vitality.
Smith is in Denmark as the recipient of the H.C. Andersen Literary Prize 2026, which honours authors worldwide whose work bears the mark of Andersen's influence. The prize has been awarded to talents such as Paulo Coelho, J.K. Rowling, Margaret Atwood, and Haruki Murakami.
