Stefan Jarl, one of Sweden's most important documentary filmmakers over many years, and Carsten Brandt developed in 2018 an unconventional artistic project: sending "film letters" to each other. The result is 14 short film episodes totaling 2 hours and 5 minutes, where each filmmaker visualizes central and pressing aspects of their existence.
Jarl's letters explore nature's beauty and importance through fascinating images that emphasize the need to preserve the environment. Brandt's contributions address his experience with serious illness and the profound thoughts about life and existence that this challenge has awakened.
"The Letter Film" constitutes a powerful, multifaceted and beautiful testimony from a generation nearing its end — rare for Scandinavian film to produce such a mature late-life work. The tone is not bleak or resigned, but crystal clear and present. The work unfolds a melancholic beauty and a subtle poetry, a fragile cinematic art that moves and touches the heart.
