Desire Paths is an experimental solo performance for soprano, electronic instruments, video and multimodal sensory experience. Composer Connor McLean has created the work, with performer Ly Tran serving as both artist and sonic material.
Through movement, touch and sound, the performance explores existential questions: How does one exist in the world? What do identity, beauty and longing mean? Ly Tran moves across the stage in search of meaning, while McLean develops an innovative performance system where sound emerges from her walking, touch, voice and technology. Microphones, transducers, speakers and portable electronic instruments become compositional tools.
The work explores feelings such as loneliness, fear and longing – and how these are expressed through the objects and roles we attach ourselves to in daily life. Her gait, touch, voice, light, floor and screen all become elements of composition and dramaturgy. She stands intensely exposed, offering herself to the audience's gaze under the stage's magnifying glass, while depicting the impossibility of "finding oneself" in a sea of meanings.
