Christmas hasn't always been cosy. Historian Caroline Nyvang from the Royal Danish Library tells the story of people who resisted, reshaped and tried to regulate Christmas traditions. Over a drink at Sorte Firkant in Nørrebro, she explores the surprising history behind Danish Christmas customs – and how social movements shaped celebration across generations.
The lecture covers how Christmas tradition is not timeless, but rather shaped through social negotiations and disagreements. Come and hear about celebration, conflict and everyday life, followed by questions and discussion about how competing norms and ideals still influence the way we gather today. Historical images will be shown to illustrate how Christmas in Denmark has looked and evolved over time.
The talk lasts about 45 minutes and is followed by Q&A and conversation. No prior knowledge of history is needed – the evening is for anyone curious. Since the talk is in English, it's perfect for international guests and Danes alike who want to enjoy a lecture in English.
