Meet translator Giulia Longo for a discussion on Tove Ditlevsen's literary works, the art of translation, and the challenges that arise when Danish poetry must be rendered in Italian. The debate explores fundamental questions about what happens when words and meaning must cross languages and cultures.
Giulia Longo is an Italian language teacher at Studieskolen and an experienced translator of both philosophy and poetry. She has translated works by Søren Kierkegaard among others and published in 2023 the first Italian anthology of Tove Ditlevsen's works, titled Una ragazzina che non vuole morire ("A Girl Who Does Not Want to Die"). During the event, she presents Ditlevsen's works and their reception in Italy, while demonstrating through concrete examples the linguistic and stylistic choices that the translator's work entails.
Program: Introduction to Ditlevsen's literary works and Italian reception, followed by open discussion and active audience debate. What does translation mean – fidelity or betrayal? How does one navigate between preserving meaning and creating understanding in a new language?
The presentation is held in accessible Italian with Danish translation as needed. You are welcome to debate in Danish or Italian. All are welcome.
