Verdi's monumental Don Carlos is presented here in a prized production from the Salzburg Festival in 2013. The work unfolds as a complex drama about politics, religion and human inner conflicts – all set in tension-filled Spain under the Inquisition.
The production is a spectacular performance directed by Peter Stein and conducted by Antonio Pappano, featuring some of opera's greatest voices: Jonas Kaufmann as Don Carlo, Anja Harteros as Elisabeth, Thomas Hampson as Rodrigo, Ekaterina Semenchuk as Eboli, Matti Salminen as Philip II and Eric Halfvarson as the Grand Inquisitor.
This film version of Verdi's later period showcases his psychological depth and dramatic power – from intimate duets to grand ensemble scenes that explore human sorrow and hope.
