OperaKino 26/27 - FALSTAFF from Salzburg Festival 2013

Experience Gioachino Verdi's classic opera Falstaff in this film screening of the production from Salzburg Festival 2013. The story revolves around the fat, vain Sir John Falstaff, who plots to seduce two married women to extract their wealth – but the two clever women turn the tables on him in a series of humorous and chaotic situations.

Cast:

• Ambrogio Maestri as Falstaff
• Fiorenza Cedolin as Alice Ford
• Stephanie Houtzeel as Meg Page
• Elisabeth Kulman as Mrs Quickly
• Conductor: Zubin Mehta

Director Michieletto sets the opera in a contemporary and highly symbolic setting – a retirement home for aging musicians, inspired by Casa Verdi in Milan. Within this frame, Falstaff becomes not merely Shakespeare's comic character, but rather a former opera star who relives his own artistic life through memories and dreams. This approach transforms the opera into both a brilliant comedy and a poignant meditation on aging, identity, and the transience of artistic life.
