Amagerbro Jazz presents a special tribute to the legendary South African bassist Johnny "Mbizo" Dyani through Songs for Mbizo Quartet. This formation celebrates Dyani's original compositions and musical legacy, which deeply shaped Pierre Dørge's New Jungle Orchestra.
The quartet comprises pianist and founder Pierre Dørge, American cornettist Kirk Knuffke, who has regularly guested with the orchestra, along with New Jungle Orchestra's bassist Thommy Andersson and drummer Martin Andersen. Together, they revive some of Dyani's most significant works in an intimate quartet setting.
The debut album Songs for Mbizo (Johnny Lives Forever) was released in 2025 on SteepleChase Records and has received enthusiastic reviews. American DownBeat magazine particularly praises the melodic expression: "...Songs For Mbizo is a delight, as brimful of melodies as it is with Dørge's quirks."
Musically, the quartet blends European avant-garde with American and South African jazz traditions, all guided by Pierre Dørge's distinctive musicianship. A concert for all who appreciate profound and artistic jazz performance.
