An innovative concert evening dedicated to exploring the concert format from a scientific perspective. The programme examines acoustic phenomena, the body's relationship to music, and precision through a carefully curated selection of works.
At the core of the programme is Ragnhild May's commissioned work 'differences', which employs custom-made sculptural instruments designed to create difference tones – the notes our ears perceive when two or more tones are played together, even though the instruments technically do not produce them. May explores here the cyborg concept and how the body and objects become entangled with technology, drawing on theoretical frameworks from Donna Haraway and Karen Barad.
The concert programme also features Cathy Van Eck's 'Music Stands', which explores musical possibilities in an object typically seen as a purely practical tool, and Bergrún Snæbjörnsdóttir's 'Axis Spirat', in which four musicians surround a moving-head light fixture that casts illuminated glass shards across the space. Long tones and counterpoint unfold in a ritualistic performance.
The evening concludes with a semi-improvised work created by Ear Transplant's core members: Matthew Grouse (electric guitar), Joss Smith (clarinets), Jónas Ásgeir Ásgeirsson (accordion), and Irene Bianco (percussion).
