How does society meet young people who have broken the law? Criminologist Katrine Barnekow Rasmussen from Copenhagen Centre for Criminology examines this important issue through research and practical work in Albertslund Municipality.
Her observations show that young people referred to the Youth Criminal Council are more likely than their peers to have been victims themselves – while these councils rarely succeed in engaging them in a restorative way. By building on principles of restoration – where those affected are heard and involved in repairing harm – we can meet people who have hurt others with the possibility of change. This raises deeper questions about our view of humanity and what we demand of institutions that must both help and make decisions.
The evening consists of a conversation lasting approximately 45 minutes followed by questions from the audience. Doors open at 17:00 with wine or water (included), the conversation starts at 17:30, and the event concludes around 19:00. The conversation is recorded and published as a podcast on the series Verden forsøgt forklaret the following week.
