Immerse yourself in the Japanese art of intentional stitching and mending. In this 2-hour workshop, learn the fundamental sashiko stitches and boro techniques – traditions rooted in the Edo period, now reimagined through modern sustainability and slowness. Sashiko means "small stitches", and each stitch bears witness to care for the material. Boro celebrates imperfection and layers cloth upon cloth – where practical repair meets poetic expression.
The workshop is led by Ida Christoffersen from YUME.ITO, a designer specializing in upcycling through sashiko, boro and indigo dyeing techniques. Ida has received 1:1 instruction from several Japanese artisans and brings this knowledge to the workshop. You will receive a brief introduction to the techniques' history and philosophy, learn the fundamental stitches that create patterns and rhythm, and find inspiration to transform worn or mundane fabric into something personal and beautiful.
You can work with water-soluble stick & stitch stickers designed by YUME.ITO or create your own patterns. All materials are provided – sample fabrics, textile scraps and inspiration stickers. Bring a piece of clothing you wish to mend or embellish if you have one; if not, we will find a project together. After the workshop, you are welcome to stay, embroider further, drink tea and get feedback on your work.
Practical: The workshop is suitable for all skill levels from age 8 and is conducted in Danish. The price is 325 DKK including materials and also includes access to the rest of the Shokunin Festival (regular price 75 DKK). Held 14 Nov. at 11.30 and 14.30, and 15 Nov. at 11.20 and 14.00. Location: Shokunin Japanese Design Festival, Kosmopol, Fiolstræde 44, Copenhagen, floor 4, room 4C (near the café).
