Welcome to the dance workshop where you will learn to move to Amapiano — a music and dance genre deeply rooted in South African townships such as Soweto. If you recognize the hit song by Tyla, you already know the genre's characteristic sound.
During the workshop, instructor Zozo will introduce you to fundamental moves like Pounce, Mnike, and Zekethe as well as their cultural significance. Amapiano — derived from the word "iPiano" in the Nguni language — is more than music and dance; it is a lifestyle. The genre flourished around 2010 as a fusion of deep house, jazz, lounge vibes, and Gqom, known for its distinctive piano sound and dynamic bass line.
You don't need prior dance experience. What matters most is your movements, your feelings, and your presence on the dance floor. As Zozo says: "It's not what you do, but how you do it. Bring the vibe, and I'll bring the fun!"
