The Normal Life is a grotesque farce about self-censorship, self-control and self-awareness. The production unfolds as a brief, intense encounter with a group of people who put zest for life in focus and portray people with unlikely possibilities for development and self-realization.
But their attempts at freedom are interrupted by the eerie control organization INNER-STASI, which appeals to our deeper desires for a good, successful life, for being good citizens, as well as to virtues such as obedience, rationality, responsibility and pride. Their struggle against INNER-STASI's surveillance has absurd comic — and deeply provocative — consequences.
The play, written by Christian Lollike, is a sharp, hilarious examination of how we ourselves become architects of our own prison through daily small self-denials and self-limitations.
