Themes of love, torment of jealousy and dark secrets run through this contemporary interpretation of a literary classic. Choreographer Cathy Marston, known for her sharp dramaturgical eye, brings Charlotte Brontë's iconic novel to the stage as both an intimate chamber drama and a grand ballet spectacle.
Jane Eyre tells the story of a young orphan who, after a difficult childhood with a foster family, seeks to forge her own path. Working as a governess at the mysterious Thornfield Hall, she meets its enigmatic owner, Edward Rochester. Their unexpectedly intense connection is shaken by secrets from his past that threaten to destroy their hopes for happiness.
Charlotte Brontë wrote the novel in 1847, creating a Gothic masterpiece that both captivated and shocked Victorian audiences. Her protagonist broke with the expectations of the time – Jane was brave, intelligent and unafraid to pursue her own desires. It was a radical portrayal of a woman for its era.
Marston's version captures the best of both forms: drama and fluidity, psychological nuance and the pure joy of dance. A musical and visually powerful ballet that gives the legacy of one of literature's most treasured works an entirely new voice.
