Discover the fascinating world of quantum physics and learn about the technological "quantum revolution" that harnesses some of nature's most paradoxical phenomena. The lecture explores how quantum computers work and what revolutionary possibilities they open up.
The world of atoms and molecules is governed by quantum physics — a realm that differs drastically from what we experience in everyday life. Here, particles seemingly exist in multiple places simultaneously, and measurements produce unpredictable results. Since quantum physics transformed our understanding of the world in the early 1900s, the theory has been confirmed repeatedly through experiments in physics and chemistry.
Program includes:
- Introduction to quantum physics fundamentals
- Existing technologies based on quantum mechanics
- Future quantum technologies
- Quantum computer development worldwide
- Practical applications of fully functional quantum computers
Since the 1990s, Denmark and the world have invested massively in developing quantum computers that leverage atomic quantum states for parallel computation. The lecture provides an overview of how far development has progressed and what these machines can solve once they are fully realized.
This is an updated version of a lecture from spring 2020. Organized by Aarhus University as part of the Public Lectures in Natural Science series in collaboration with hosts in multiple locations and supported by the Carlsberg Foundation.
