Opera Cinema presents Tchaikovsky's classic opera Iolanta from the Vienna State Opera in a compelling new production directed by Evgeny Titov and conducted by Tugan Sokhiev.
Princess Iolanta has been blind from birth, but her father, King René, has never revealed her condition to her. The physician Ibn-Hakia believes she can only be healed if she becomes aware of her blindness and desires to see. When the knight Vaudémont meets Iolanta by chance, they fall in love, and he inadvertently reveals her blindness to her. This awakens her longing to regain her sight. After treatment, Iolanta recovers her vision, and the opera concludes with happiness, love, and gratitude.
Featuring Elena Stikhina as Iolanta, Ivo Stanchev as King René, and Dmytro Popov as Vaudémont.
Titov's interpretation explores deeper meanings of regaining sight—not only physically, but also existentially as a journey from protected ignorance to a more complex and meaningful reality.
