A captivating evening exploring the hidden kingdom of fungi with Professor Lynne Boddy from Cardiff University, one of the world's leading experts in fungal ecology. With 50 years of research into fungal behaviour, mycelial networks, and their critical role in Earth's ecosystems, Boddy reveals why fungi are indispensable to our survival.
What makes fungi essential? How do they behave? Can they remember? Professor Boddy answers these questions through research on wood-inhabiting fungi, demonstrating how mycelium – networks of microscopic threads – can form enormous, long-lived structures spanning many metres and years. She explores how fungi compete using enzymes and chemicals, and how small organisms influence their behaviour and success in nature.
Before the lecture, Orgelheimers – a Science & Cocktails favourite – will perform a mix of surf, jazz, and groove on two Hammond organs, guitar, and drums. Event held in English.
