An essay is an attempt – and anyone can write one. At this workshop, you explore the genre that stretches between fiction and non-fiction. Through exemplary texts and collective analysis, you work toward understanding what characterizes an effective essay. Where do you find the linguistic engine? What place should your personal "I" have – or should it disappear entirely? And how do you engage in dialogue with other texts?
The workshop is structured around a lecture from instructor Amalie Langballe, followed by practical writing exercises. Amalie is an author and journalist who uses her personal perspective to explore themes such as sexuality, power, desire, and human relationships. She debuted in 2019 with "forsvindingsnumre," a grief novel about a daughter's journey through mourning after her mother's death, and published the 2025 novel "elskende," set in a medieval brothel. In 2026, the essay collection "Nye dyder" – conversations with the Bible – came out.
From 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Kvarterhuset in Glassalen. Free participation requires registration on Billetto. Bring your own computer and/or paper and pen, as table space is very limited. Questions? Contact literature coordinator Jakob.
